How long will printed outdoor fabric last in Australian sun? +

Plan on 12 to 24 months of continuous outdoor exposure before fade is obvious, and closer to 12 in Queensland and the Northern Territory where UV is harshest. Sheltered south-facing installs run longer. Large flat areas of red, orange and deep blue shift first because those pigments carry the least UV stability, so a design built on those colours will look tired well before a design built on dark neutrals does.

When should I use mesh instead of solid fabric? +

Use mesh any time the banner is fixed to scaffolding, a fence line or a building face where wind can load it. Airmesh is a knitted open fabric, roughly a third of the surface being holes, so air passes through instead of pushing on your fixings, which is what tears eyelets out and bends frames. The trade-off is density: colours read lighter than the same file on solid fabric, and you see through it against a bright sky.

What is 600D polyester for, and how is it different from airmesh? +

600D polyester is a heavy closed weave used where the fabric has to take handling rather than wind, so equipment covers, structure skins, hard-wearing panels and repeat-use event pieces. It blocks light and holds a colour density mesh cannot. It also catches wind like a sail, so anything above about 2 square metres on an exposed frame needs proper tie-downs or it becomes a load on the structure. Choose by the failure you are trying to avoid.

How should a scaffolding banner be fixed so it does not tear? +

Hem all four edges and set eyelets at 300mm to 500mm centres, then tie at every eyelet with cable ties or bungee cord rather than rope at the corners only. Corner-only fixing concentrates the whole wind load on four points and that is where the fabric splits. Leave the panel slightly slack, not drum tight, so it can move. On long runs, split the job into panels of 6m or less and join at a scaffold standard.

What artwork should I send for a large outdoor panel? +

Send vector artwork where you can, or a raster file built at 1:10 scale at 300dpi, which is the same resolution as full size at 30dpi and prints clean at viewing distances over 5m. Work in CMYK, convert type to outlines, and add 100mm of bleed on every edge so hems and pole pockets do not eat into the design. Keep logos and text at least 150mm inside the trim line.

Can you print truss banners to my exact frame? +

Yes. Send the outside face dimensions of the truss run and how you intend to fix it, and the panel is made to suit. Most truss banners are made 50mm to 100mm undersize on width so the ties pull the fabric flat instead of leaving it baggy. Tell us whether the banner wraps the front face only or returns around the ends, because a wrap needs extra material and moves where the artwork has to stay safe.

Are these fabrics any use indoors? +

600D polyester is, for covers, skirting and anything that gets dragged around a venue. Mesh is not, because indoor lighting sits close to the fabric and the holes show as a grey haze across flat colour. If you want fabric for indoor backdrops, stretch frames or sewn goods, the dye-sublimation stock in Custom Printed Fabric by the Metre is the one to buy, being softer, wrinkle-resistant and made to be tensioned rather than tied.
