What size umbrella covers a standard cafe table? +

A 2m or 2.7m square covers a four-seat table with the chairs pushed in. Go to a 3m market umbrella for a six-seater or for two small tables side by side, and accept that it needs a heavier base and more clearance from the building line. Square canopies waste less shade than round ones over rectangular tables. Measure the table plus 400mm on each side and buy to that, not to the table alone.

Does the base come with the umbrella? +

No, bases are separate, and that is deliberate because the base you need depends on where the umbrella stands. A Round Metal Base holds a paved courtyard umbrella down in normal conditions and stays put when the venue closes. A Round Water Bag fills on site and empties for transport, which is what you want if the umbrella travels to markets in a ute. On a windy corner site, use both.

Market umbrella or tilting patio umbrella? +

Buy the market umbrella if the canopy is the sign. It sits level, prints cleanly across all panels and reads the same from every approach, which is what sponsors pay for. The tilting patio umbrella angles the canopy to block low western sun in the late afternoon, and that is worth more than branding at a winery or a beer garden. The tilt mechanism is one more moving part to fail, so keep it out of high-traffic public sites.

Is the valance worth paying for? +

Yes if people see the umbrella from ground level rather than from above. The valance is the short skirt around the edge, and it sits near eye height for anyone standing nearby, so a name repeated around it reads at conversational distance where the main canopy panels are edge-on and unreadable. It also stiffens the perimeter and hides the rib ends. Skip it if the umbrella is only ever photographed from a balcony.

Can I leave it open overnight or in wind? +

Close it. An open umbrella is a single mast carrying the whole wind load, and it will either invert the ribs or drag the base across the pavers before it breaks. Wind does more damage to umbrellas than anything else, so crank it down at the end of trade and whenever a squall comes through, even if the base is rated for the site. Rain alone is fine, rain with gusts is not.

How long before the printed canopy fades? +

Two to three seasons of permanent outdoor duty is a fair expectation, and longer if the umbrella is closed when not in use. Australian UV is the limit and it attacks the top face hardest, so an umbrella left open in a north-facing courtyard fades unevenly and shows a pale strip along the leading rib. Bright reds and purples shift first, dark navy and black hold longest. Closing it at night roughly doubles the life.

Where should the logo sit so it actually reads? +

On alternating panels, not on every one. Printing every panel identically gives you a busy canopy where nothing dominates, while a mark on alternate panels leaves plain colour between them and reads from further off. Keep the mark in the middle third of the panel, because the tip is a narrow point and the hem gets partly covered.
