Which fabric should I choose for an outdoor banner? +

Airmesh, every time, once the banner is going up outside on a fence or scaffold. The perforations let wind through instead of loading the hems and eyelets, so a 3m x 1m banner does not tear its corners out in the first gust. The trade-off is a slightly softer image, because the holes break up fine detail. Keep type large and avoid thin serifs on airmesh.

What does GSM actually tell me? +

Weight per square metre, which is a rough proxy for opacity and body rather than quality. A 115gsm knitted polyester drapes softly and lets light through; a 300gsm block-out cloth hangs heavy and stops it. Higher gsm costs more to ship and folds with more memory, so it is not automatically the better choice. Pick the weight against the job: light for hanging drops, heavy where anything sits behind the graphic.

Why would I print on fluorescent knitted polyester? +

For UV-lit and blacklight environments, where ordinary print goes dead. Fluorescent dyes on knitted polyester glow under 365nm blacklight, which is why nightclub decor, festival stages and glow-run events use them. Under normal hall lighting they simply read as very bright colours. The trade-off is that the palette is narrow, so brand colours will not reproduce faithfully and photographs printed on it look wrong. Use it for graphics and type, not imagery.

Does the fabric arrive finished, or just printed? +

Printed and cut to size, not made up. You get the cloth and the print, so budget for hemming, sewing or framing at your end. That is the point of ordering here: you are specifying a substrate for a job you will finish yourself, and you can compare airmesh against sheer voile before committing.
